SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) - - A tenacious computer worm which has wriggled its way onto machines worldwide is set to evolve on April Fool's Day, becoming harder to exterminate but not expected to wreak havoc.

A task force assembled by Microsoft has been working to stamp out the worm, referred to as Conficker or DownAdUP, and the US software colossus has placed a bounty of 250,000 dollars on the heads of those responsible for the threat.

The worm is programmed to modify itself on Wednesday to become harder to stop, according to Trend Micro threat researcher Paul Ferguson, who is part of the Conficker task force.

"There is no evidence of it going into attack mode or dropping any particular payload on April 1st," Ferguson said in an interview.

"What people controlling the botnet are doing is building in survivability because of efforts by the good guys to lessen the harm of this thing."

The worm, a self-replicating program, takes advantage of networks or computers that haven't kept up to date with security patches for Windows RPC Server Service.

It can infect machines from the Internet or by hiding on USB memory sticks carrying data from one computer to another. Once in a computer it digs deep, setting up defenses that make it hard to extract.

Malware could be triggered to steal data or turn control of infected computers over to hackers amassing "zombie" machines into "botnet" armies.

A troubling aspect of Conficker is that it harnesses computing power of a botnet to crack passwords.

Microsoft has modified its free Malicious Software Removal Tool to detect and get rid of Conficker.

"As this threat continues to evolve, Microsoft and other collaborative companies will continue to identify new ways to disrupt the Conficker threat to give customers more time to update their systems," said Christopher Budd, security response communication lead for Microsoft.

Computer users are advised to stay current on anti-virus tools and Windows updates, and to protect computers and files with strong passwords.

Conficker is programmed to reach out to 250 websites daily to download commands from its masters.

On Wednesday, the worm will begin connecting with 50,000 websites daily to better hide where orders originate, according to Mikko Hypponen of F-Secure computer security firm.

"They basically upped the ante; trying to make our lives more difficult," Ferguson said. "They realized the good guys were starting to intercept their communications."

The infection rate has slowed from a fierce pace earlier this year, but computers that are not updated with a software patch released by Microsoft remain vulnerable, according to security specialists.

Hypponen wrote in a message at F-Secure's website that Conficker is in one to two million computers and that most of those machines are believed to have an early version of the malicious software lacking the April 1 trigger.

Conficker was first detected in November 2008.

Among the ways one can tell if their machine is infected is that the worm will block efforts to connect with websites of security firms such as Trend Micro or Symantec where there are online tools for removing the virus.

"Once a machine is infected, it becomes very hard to clean up," Ferguson said. "There is no indication anywhere of (Conficker) doing anything but just sitting there. We don't know whether another shoe is going to drop, or if there is another shoe at all."

Hackers have taken advantage of Conficker hype by using promises of information or cures to lure Internet users to websites booby trapped with malicious software, according to security specialists.

"It seems that every other day you see some story about the Internet being hobbled together with bubble gum and paper clips," Ferguson said. "Conficker could be the biggest non-story of the year; at least that's what I hope it is."

wartsila...

Firstly, I did not know there is such a company until Mh told me after the day we got marry in MapleSEA (if I'm not wrong). Her uncle is working in that company. Having no idea what IGN to name upon character creation, she named it "wartsila".

Earlier this morning at about 9.20am, when I switched on the computer plug and pressed the button on the CPU to start the system, the power light keeps blinking.

I was like... wth? Spoil liao?
Computer needs to take MC (Medical Cert)???
[MC in this case = send for repair]

I went to switch off the computer plug.
Then switched it on again after a minute.
Pressed the button on the CPU to start the system again.

Tada!~
Back to normal.

Stupid solution I can ever think of. lol~

It is confirmed that 2nd wave of Mass Account Hacked issue has occured in MapleSEA since around 16 March 2009 (Monday). Rumours: Changing of MapleSEA Account password recently will lead to your account being hacked.

The game publisher had urgently disabled the functions yesterday.

Situation was stablised after a patch on October 2008, where players are required to set 2nd password and change the 1st password. And now, it comes again. Is their security still weak even after the 1st wave of Mass Account Hacked isse dated 01 August 2008???

I suppose, most players will answer "Yes".
And some players, will add on with "#(&^%%*&#^%".

Whenever it comes to release of results, I will normally called it "Judgement Day" or "Doom Day".

Why Judgement Day?
It is to judge whether I will graduate from SP or not.
Yes, if I cleared this semester modules = Graduate!!!
But, will my GPA goes up or down?
FYP... heavy credits.

Why Doom Day?
It is to see how bad I perform this semester.
Well, I don't see any point to see it as a "Doom Day" for me since all the modules I took, can be cleared easily.
No worries for ELIT, ELSA & WEBS.

Whatever it is... I shall be waiting for the result. Time to face the reality.

Headed to 四马路 Kuan Yin temple with my mother, since it is Guan Yin's birthday. Go there pray. Extremely crowded because it is a Sunday.

Nothing much to say. Headed to my next destination while my mother headed home.

Route 2
The train suddenly slowed down while on its way to Jurong East.
Reason: A sudden super duper thunderstorm.

What can I see inside the train?
Fully packed train
And... rain water flowing from the train doors' gap.

What can I see outside?
NOTHING!!! Except extreme heavy rain & frequent lightning
And the almost-going-to-fall trees & signboards

What can be heard?
Passengers are talking
Frequent thunder

What can I see when the train arrived at Jurong East?
Passengers who alight at this station, "run for their life".
Passengers who board at this station... are wet.

What can I see on the road while the train is approaching Chinese Garden?
A deserted Jurong East with no vehicle at all on the road.

What have I done when the train approaches Boon Lay?
While most passengers alighted from this station, I took a sit and travel toward Joo Koon, then loop back to Boon Lay and alight.
(Well, since I still have a lot of time. Meeting Mh at 4pm, but I arrived at 3.30pm after looping)

Thanks to MapleSEA 2x EXP event, hoho... hit 183 on 14 March 2009, about 3.40pm. Then I went to calculate:

23.08bil EXP to 200 0%. lol~... a lot like siao. Nvm, taking a break the very next day. Find Mh again.

Reason?
She FC-ed 1 of the Taiko songs in 魔王 on the day I hit Level 183 in MapleSEA.
The song she FC-ed: Seasons of Asia.
Is my message which I tagged on 13 March 2009 in her blog a magic? Or just coincidence?
The very next day she really FC. O_O


Also need to pass her the PPC. Anyway it is the PPC, which is used by her... based on the serial number I provided her that day.

Basically, before heading AMK, I bought PPC at discounted price since Mh also needs it for her Pet EQ. Ok lar, you save I also save an amount per 10k PPC.

Then go pay bill on behalf of my father. 1st time use S.A.M. machine pay bill, lol... scare key in wrong. Key wrong = GG!

Headed to SSDC to find out some information on BTT and other related stuffs.

Only then I headed to AMK Hub.
Fish soup is... OMG!!! No wonder last Saturday during Taiko gathering, the Fish Soup stall... long queue sia.
Now I know why. Haha.

Then go arcade awhile. You know lar... I want to break this Kageyiko (normal) score. Kns 350k+ is so low.
I tapped card after a guy played finish.
Then he also go tap.
You know lar... hit drum = start mah.
In the end, double drum.
What to do... 1st song already killed him, lol~... I "murderer" sia.

And I really screwed it up, although passed.
